HOW ‘THE BRICK’ WAS BORN
An award that holds a unique place in Gresford CC history is The Brick – presented to the player who does the daftest, dimmest, dopiest thing of the season.
The Brick, also known as the Tri-Plan Trophy, was born in the mid-Eighties following a controversial decision by the North Wales cricket authorities. Ian Weaver takes up the story…
‘We made it to the final of a midweek competition called the Tri-Plan Trophy. We asked if it was OK to play David Williams (a former Gresford player who had gone on to play for Glamorgan). We were told he could play.
‘The final, against Wrexham, was played over two legs, and we won by 10 wickets. Wrexham then lodged a complaint about David playing, even though he’d done very little to affect the game. The authorities, in their wisdom, decided to overturn the result.
‘I was building a house at the time, and I took a brick, glued a plastic monkey to it, and sprayed it silver.
‘On our awards night, I gave a little speech and said that the authorities had decided we shouldn’t have been disqualified and the result had been reversed. Then I produced the ‘trophy’. It took a moment or two for the joke to sink in.’
Since then, The Brick has become a fixture on the club’s awards night. Here, for posterity, is a roll call of Brick recipients:
